My name is Kevin Davis. I practise law with the firm Waterous Holden Amey Hitchon. We are a firm of 20 lawyers. We’ve been in Brantford for over 90 years. We have a proud history of serving the city of Brantford and the County of Brant and beyond that the greater region.

We are able to provide a wide array of legal services to both business, commercial clients and also individuals.

What we specialize in is, is serving the needs of small to medium sized businesses. That’s been our strength and our past history, that’s how the firm has grown.

We also have a large component of the firm that does serve the individual needs of personal clients, whether that be wills and estates, personal injury, family matters, estate litigation, and we’re able to do that because of the large contingent of lawyers and support staff we have here.

In comparison to, say, larger firms that might be located in the GTA, we think we provide a level of service that’s the equivalent because of the number of lawyers we have here and the various specialties we all have, but we think we’re much more affordable.

Unquestionably, when you move beyond the lawyers we have here, our next source of strength is our support staff. We have over 55 support staff, many of whom have been with us 30-35 years, and, because they have been with us so long they obviously know us as lawyers very well, they know our systems and they have a knowledge of the law and the administrative process that supports us as lawyers.

We were taught by our founding partner Dick Waterous that you have to know the client. We understand business. We are a business ourselves, we run ourselves very much like a business, so we strive to understand our clients and their needs and how we can best provide the legal services they require on an affordable basis.

We think its important that our firm, that the building itself makes a statement to the city and the clients. Originally it was a doctor’s home and office. And then about 25 years ago we expanded the building. We pretty much doubled the floor space. It projects an image that we believe competence, stability, permanence and also we believe it adds another dimension to the building mix in downtown Brantford.

We’re very close to the core, City Hall, a lot of the institutions that we deal with on a daily basis. We’ve had partners that have been City Councillors. We’ve had original partner Reg Waterous, he was the Mayor of Brantford for a number of years. We’ve had 4 presidents of the Chamber of Commerce. We’re a firm that’s closely intertwined with what Brantford is, and what it is that makes Brantford such a great city to live and work in.

Well, this city has undergone a real transformation the last 30 years. We think its a stronger community because the number of businesses here are greater in number, and more diversified.

There’s a spinoff impact on other businesses that are now locating in downtown. It’s simply much more attractive to be situated in the downtown area and doing business here.

Looking to the future, absolutely we will be staying in Brantford, we expect to continue to grow and meet the needs of our clients in Brantford and the County of Brant.
