May 2018 Construction Numbers

The City of Brantford released the May 2018 Summary Report on Construction Activity. The report shows a construction value of $19.418 million for permits issued in the month of May.

The construction value attained in the month of May is below the value attained in 2017, however it is higher than in the three previous years and also above the past five year average for the construction value reached in the month of May. The high construction value attained in May 2017 was partly due to the issuance of a building permit to Ferrero Canada Limited, for the construction of a new cocoa processing plant, which had a construction value of $15.0 million.

The number of permits issued has also decreased in comparison to last year's figures. In comparison with May 2017 construction values, an increase was seen in the Institutional & Government Sector, while decreases were seen across all other Sectors of construction.

The only increase occurred in the Institutional & Government Sector of construction. In May 2018, five building permits were issued for construction within this Sector, with a total construction value of $12.565 million, compared with May 2017, when there were no building permits issued in this Sector of construction.   The largest valued permit in the Institutional & Government Sector was issued to the City of Brantford, for the construction of a new elevated water storage tank located at 346 Shellard Lane, which had a construction value of $8.360 million.   A significant permit was also issued to the Brantford Christian School for an addition to the private school located at 7 Calvin Street, which had a construction value of$3.500 million.

The largest decrease occurred in the Industrial Sector of construction. In May 2018, there were eight building permits issued in this Sector of construction having a total construction value of $0.603 million, compared with May 2017, when there were seven building permits issued, having a total construction value of$15.562 million. The largest permit issued within the Industrial Sector in May 2018 was issued to a numbered company for alterations to a manufacturing facility located at 175 Savannah Oaks Drive, which had a construction value of $0.110 million.

Other noteworthy building permits issued in May include a permit to construct alterations within the 'E wing' of the Brantford General Hospital, which had a construction value of $0.600 million, and a permit to complete interior alterations to create a fitness club within a commercial building located at 565 West Street, which had a construction value of $0.340 million.

The year-to-date construction value of $51.530 million is below last year's total of $94.664 million, however for the year, a total of 367 building permits have been issued, which is comparable to the 370 permits issued in 2017 over the same time period.

The record-setting construction values attained in 2017 will be difficult to replicate, however, the construction value of permits issued to date have provided encouraging figures, and staff remains optimistic that the construction industry continues to provide high levels of activity throughout.
