March 2018 Construction Numbers

The City of Brantford released the March 2018 Summary Report on Construction Activity. The report shows a construction value of $5.080 million for permits issued in the month of March.

The construction value attained in March 2018 is below the construction value attained in March 2017; while the number of permits issued has also decreased in comparison to last year's figures. In comparison with March 2017 construction values, an increase was seen in the Residential (Accessory, Alterations, Additions) Sector, while decreases were seen across all other Sectors of construction.

The only increase occurred in the Residential (Accessory, Alterations, Additions) Sector of construction. In March 2018, thirty-eight building permits were issued for construction within this Sector, with a total construction value of $1.313 million, compared with March 2017, when there were forty-two building permits issued in this Sector of construction having a construction value of $0.949 million.

The largest decrease occurred in the Commercial Sector of construction. In March 2018, there were ten building permits issued in this Sector, having a construction value of $0.704 million, compared with March 2017, when there were nineteen building permits issued having a total construction value of $3.673 million. Last year's Commercial Sector was partially driven by the issuance of four building permits to Conklin Place Inc, for construction at 360 Conklin Road, which had a combined construction value of $3.20 million.

Noteworthy building permits issued in March include a permit to complete mechanical alterations to the W. Ross MacDonald School located at 350 Brant Avenue, which had a construction value of $0.500 million, and a permit to complete alterations within a commercial building located at 260 Lynden Road, which had a construction value of $0.330 million.

The year-to-date construction value of $25.949 million is below last year's total of $30.427 million, however for the year, a total of 198 building permits have been issued, which is an increase from the 169 permits issued in 2017 over the same time period.

The start of the 2018 construction year has continued to build off of the strong numbers attained in 2017. The construction value of permits issued have provided encouraging figures, and staff remains optimistic that the construction industry continues to provide high levels of activity throughout 2018.
